How to Listen:
The discussion on driverless cars went all over the road. As cyclists, I think we should be focused on the possibility that fully sensored cars, and maybe driver-less as well, will improve the safety of cyclists in the cities, suburbs, and backroads. What we don’t want are roads full of more and more human drivers that are increasingly distracted. IMO, pedestrians and cyclists won’t play chicken with driverless cars any more than they do with human-driven cars. Which means, there will still be some who do, and some of them will still die.
tired of the whining about “sexism” pro sports is entertainment if you draw you get paid. On the non-pro side payouts should be proportional to rider turnout. Racy ads? get over it
To add to Tim’s suggestion, I ride with an annoying bright flashing front light whenever on the road. I don’t know if it’s effective on distracted car and truck drivers, but being knocked to the ground twice and seriously injured has led me to this. I also have loud electronic horns for my bikes, and I use them judiciously to try to grab a driver’s attention, just to make sure they know I’m there. Will this keep me safe. No. Not until we restrict driver’s licenses to those who drive as seriously as death and put everyone else on transit or in driverless cars.
@DP-San Diego I agree, a future full of driverless cars would be wonderful because it’s human error and human power-trips that lead to the great majority of road deaths. The alternative scenario that was discussed is, however, a distinct possibility, and one informed by the creation, by motordom, of the “jaywalker” in the 1920s.
Both scenarios could come about in varying degrees and if the latter one doesn’t it could be because we lobby hard to make sure it doesn’t.
Listening to you talk about female cyclists and those in the cycling industry taking ownership of the female side of the industry got me wondering: Where is the-spokeswomen podcast? 😉
In all seriousness, I know there are female cycling bloggers and writers, but it would be interesting to hear females in the industry talk about the issues. On that note, would love to hear Donna Tocci, and other females back on your program. (Although, the addition of Jay T. is working out great, too.)
