This follows a talk given at the Geneva Motor Show by a bike industry organisation boss – he called for all bicycles to have beacons so they can be seen by the semi- and fully-autonomous cars of the near feature. Historian Peter Norton – author of “Fighting Traffic” – discusses the historical, ethical and mobility-centre issues that such a call raises.

Super informative podcast! I especially appreciate Mr. Norton’s ability to connect this with early motordom history.
Just started to listen sounds like its going to be a great podcast about a very important topic that we need to be vigilant about … but I would like to point out that by law (EU / UK) sheep are already all tagged and that since 2010 the tags have included EID tags (electronic identification) that can be scanned – so I daresay that some future regulations could enforce these tags to be “beacons” of some sort (EIDs placed an extra expense burden on farmers … “beacons” would be an additional one). Of course sometimes some animals evade tagging or the tags come off (which is why 2 are required) or some are born wild. OK, having put this out there … it’s back to the croft’s kitchen for the rest of the podcast 🙂
I didn’t know that about tagged sheep. I know that dogs are chipped.
I’m a week behind, but did find this conversation interesting/frustrating that the discussion started from a bike guy saying we all should ‘beaconize’, rather than standing up for bike folk in our right to not be run over, beacon or not. The car side of the discussion has enough money and momentum going for them, don’t give away points in a discussion to them for free!
