How to Listen:
I’ve been thinking about this since I finished listening yesterday. I agree 100% with what DL Byron said about the Michael Smith issue. The reaction should probably have been about using this as an opportunity to explain to Mr. Smith the rules of the road. Screaming on Twitter and ESPN.com about getting someone fired isn’t going to work if the ESPN people don’t understand cycling and the Tour de France. I watch ESPN all the time. They never talk about cycling. Never. They don’t understand what it takes to be a cyclist. We need to use our voices for a positive change to people’s attitude.

Quick note – tomorrow is Cadel Day in Melbourne. Massive press crew met his plane at Melbourne airport which was live on morning TV. Tomorrow is a ride along St Kilda Road to Federation Square in the CBD with a civic reception. We have fairly good coverage of cycling due to our track cycclist but due to his MTB crossover to road his win could do great things for all areas of cycling downunder. Cheers. Love the show.

Way to hate on the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. The race is in its first year and is will have growing pains. Neil – you are incessantly bitter and negative. Frankly, it’s getting old. And your misqoute of the Pro Cycling Challenge tweet is flat out brutal. It did not say Vandevelde won the TDF. It said his team did, which is true. You obviously are bitter about not being chosen as the race’s official blogger. With this negativity, I wouldn’t want you as my blogger either.
The biggest misconception that leads to comments like Michael Smith’s is lack of witnessing the physics resulting from the disparity of a car vs cyclist. Cyclists see it, see videos of it, sympathize with friends who have suffered from it. At worst, most see car vs. car collisions– not in the same league. How to give them that understanding without them becoming cyclists? That is the tough question. The other is how to mandate the education of dealing with cyclists in driving schools.
